SOY: A New Acronym Unveiled

I'm sure the majority of you are familiar with the acronyms that have infiltrated our cyber world - from text messages to facebook statuses, these acronyms punctuate and augment our communication. Most of the time I can figure them out but, on occasion, I have been known to ask my younger cousin for help in decoding. FML was tough to figure out but now that I can "read" this phrase, it definitely adds emotion to the blurb it is attached to.

I have a new acronym (I think it's new, correct me if I'm wrong) that I would like to officially unveil today and it is in honour of my mom. The 2 year anniversary of her passing is approaching quickly at the beginning of March and one evening while putting my son to bed I thought, what can I do this year to honour her? Last year I wrote a dreadful poem. One year I will write a better one. But this year, I will remind you of a saying she used to say (see post The Three Words My Mother Used To Say)..."shit on you". If I may take a moment to put this in context you may see the humour in it.

My mom spent a few years in London, England as a student. How she survived the land of the English I will never understand because these are a couple examples of the expressions she butchered. And I report these with love, a smile and a tear.

"Let's play it by THE ear"
"Make IT my day"

I'd like to report more but sadly, these are the only two that come to mind. So, if you can imagine this woman, with a Brindian accent (British + Indian, heavy on the Indian) who otherwise could not use an English expression correctly, coming at you with a well-deserved and rightly stated "Shit on you!"...well, it used to throw me into fits of giggles. If only on the inside. Unless it was addressed to my brother. Then the giggles would definitely be external.

So, fellow cyber-space dwellers, use this expression and use it wisely. Somebody cut you off in traffic and you want to post it on facebook? Follow it up with a SOY. Boyfriend forgot to show up to your graduation ceremony? Text him with a SOY. Sister spilled wine on your shirt that she was not supposed to be borrowing in the first place? Hit her up with a SOY.

But please don't use this offensively, it's more of a defensive expression. My mom would be appalled if I started some sort of abusive revolution. You kind of have to SOY someone with a bit of a smile. And if someone asks you what SOY means, tell them and where it comes from. It'll kind of be like having my mom on facebook since she never had the pleasure. And yet, I can still say what I want to say on facebook without hearing about it later from her :)

Thanks for reading...
